Tom Green is a man of many hats: actor, comedian, talk show host, rapper, writer, director, producer and most recently, brewer. The morning of his stand-up show at the Irvine Improv on January 22nd, the funnyman called in to the KX FM 104.7 studio for a chat with morning show host Tyler Russell about Orange County, past and current projects, and his personal craft beer.

For more than twenty years, Green has entertained audiences on the screen and beyond with his quick wit and edgy humor. In 1994, before the days of reality TV, his public access-broadcasted “The Tom Green Show” featured home-video-style footage of unscripted conversations with passerby’s and provocative pranks, sometimes amusingly carried out at his parents’ expensemovie poster freddy got fingered |KX FM 104.7 fm.Green’s acting career was launched into high gear in 1999 after MTV picked up his show, appearing in blockbusters Charlie’s Angels and Road Trip in 2000. He may be best known, however, for the 2001 box-office flop Freddy Got Fingered, which has become a cult hit in the years since its initially failed release. As he himself tells Tyler in the interview, “When I did Freddy Got Fingered, it was sort of this critically reviled piece of cinema and it didn’t get the best reviews. And now here we are 10-15 years later, and people know every line of the movie and it’s got this cult following, so that’s a lot of fun…” When they spot Green, these fans sometimes stop to serenade him in the street with their renditions of “Daddy Would You Like Some Sausage?”.

As of October 2013, Green hosts “Tom Green Live” on Mark Cuban-owned network AXS TV. A decade ago, Green started this talk show from a makeshift studio in his living room and broadcast it on his website, which he refers to as “The Channel”. In the hour-long talk show, Green converses with celebrities like Steve Carell, Weird Al Yankovic and Dan Rather and is broadcast live every Thursday from Burbank. His first stand-up special, also titled “Tom Green Live”, premiered in 2012 on Showtime and Netflix, and he has another in the works.

While global audiences are familiar with The Tom Green Show, fewer know of The Tom Green Beer. As his accent suggests, Green hails from Canada, the northerly land of maple leaves and strong beer. In 2013, Green collaborated with Beau’s All Natural Brewing Company, a small craft brewery in his hometown of Ottawa, to bring the world a milk stout with his face on the bottle. Featuring organic hops and a creamy texture with notes of chocolate and coffee, this is definitely not your average ale. Though only available in Canada and select US markets at the moment, Green told Tyler they have plans to bring it to SoCal sometime in the next year; if the reviews are anything to go on, it’ll be worth hunting down when it does! Beau’s flagship brew is Lug Tread, a Kölsch-style lagered ale that has won the Gold in the Canadian Brewing Awards four of the last five years. Near the beginning of their conversation, Green tells Tyler what he loves about Orange County–the beaches, the people, skateboarding culture and the “California lifestyle” in general. Around these parts, Green says he frequents Los Angeles favorite Golden Road Brewing and Escondido’s Stone Brewing.

your tune banner..that is, if you have one of the 122 names to which Jonathan set music, wrote lyrics, and filmed himself singing with an acoustic guitar. That’s right, in a true feat of clever word-working and creative thinking, with an honest intention to make people happy, Jonathan Katz wrote and sang songs that he is marketing as for anyone who has wanted a song about them or even for significant others to sing to each other, in a project called YourTune, with a YouTube channel of the same name!

I had the awesome chance to ask Jonathan a few questions about his project via email! Read his answers below, and check out a few of my favorites from Jonathan’s channel!

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRlPrgGrhhM][youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bRhHSUufIU]

Liz: How long does each song take you to write? Or are they all different? I was pleasantly surprised (when listening to the song for my own name) that the lyrics aren’t painfully general (I am thinking in the sarcastic generalization of love songs performed by Bo Burnham in his “Repeat Stuff” song, haha), even though you wrote so many songs, and you wrote them for others to use to serenade their love.

Jonathan:  I approach each song as its own project – its own masterpiece. Some take longer than others, but I put  the care into each song as if I were truly in love with the girl of that name. I tried to avoid overly general lyrics, but I also couldn’t say things that were too specific, especially physical attributes. Each song had to feel meaningful, but stay applicable to a wide audience.

L: What are your favorite songs of all the names?

J: I’m trying not to play favorites because I really do love all the songs. I put work into each and every one!

However, I’m obsessed with perfect rhymes (and getting close) and here some that I think are fun:
– from Danielle: “when you’re sick I got the chicken soup/I’ll hang around and tell you jokes till you recoup
– from Jill ” fancy vodka we get our fill/triple distilled
– from Cassandra: Cassandra maybe it’s me/a grand romantic gesture would be
-from Julia “I’ll never fool ya/don’t wanna retool ya
L: When did you first have the idea to do this?
J: I had the idea last fall and wanted to time it out right to be able to release Valentine’s week.
L: Do you have future plans for the project? Or will you just let it end at Valentine’s Day?
J: I would really like this to keep going. I have another list of names I’d like to get to, and some people have already e-mailed requests. The response has been very positive, and hopefully it gets shared on a larger scale. That would certainly help fuel more songs!
I myself definitely hope that this project can continue far into the future, as there is now so much potential for all types of names, and I have confidence that with Jonathan’s song writing skills, each song can continue to be unique and beautiful!

Animal Heart Album Art

Nina Persson is a Swedish singer, well known for her work as the lead singer of the hugely successful band The Cardigans. However, though the Cardigans are not on hiatus and are indeed still playing shows occasionally, Nina also released her first solo album, “Animal Heart,” in 2014. Nina stopped by our studio back in October to talk with Brian Holst, KX Music Director and weekday afternoon host, before playing at Laguna Beach’s Mozambique restaurant.

In Brian’s interview above, Nina mentions facts about her album, such as that she felt comfortable using her own New York house as the backdrop to the the title track’s video, as well as opens up about her artistic decision to go solo, and how that relates to being a mother of a four-year-old.

Perhaps the most important thing conveyed by Nina is that in all her art, whether it be solo projects or with The Cardigans, she will continue to play music as for as long as she continues to find it fun to do!

“The Nameless Ghoul” of Swedish Band Ghost Speaks with KX FM 104.7 FM Radio Host Brett Ecklund

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otbspvbdEvo]

Brett Ecklund of Jazz Quest Radio had the chance to sit down with one of the Nameless Ghouls, from the band Ghost, the day of their performance at The Observatory in Santa Ana back in May as part of their Tour Year Zero 2014.

Ghost, The Observatory, Tour Year Zero 2014 | KX FM 104.7 FM

Their conversation ranged from the differences between Ghost’s first and second album, to the inspiration for the band’s style and philosophy.

Ghost, formed in Sweden in 2008, is a heavy metal band known not only for their music, intense videos, fan support, but also for their live performances, where five of the six members (the Nameless Ghouls) wear hooded robes, and the singer, Papa Emeritus, wears skull makeupPapa Emeritus, Nameless Ghouls | KX FM 104.7 FM.

The Ghoul that Brett chatted with actually mentioned that even though “no one gets it,” Papa Emeritus’ name is a sardonic pun within itself, due to the idea that Popes don’t retire until they die, yet Emeritus is a title an esteemed person receives after they retire.

As to their performance, and their whole style as a band, they choose to see their work as a “living work,” able to grow and change organically, while still being held together by an overarching dedication to the music.Brett Ecklund, Nameless Ghost, Observatory OC | KX FM 104.7 FM

Magic Giant performed at the Constellation Room at Santa Ana’s Observatory last Thursday night. Though a later show, it garnered no less support. A full and very excited room met the Venice Beach band of indie folk-rockers, who came on after a rowdy set by opening band Vinnie and the Hooligans. And we weren’t disappointed! The band opened early with the amazingly upbeat “Glass Heart,” which had the whole crowd dancing and singing along. Lead singer Austin Bis invited the crowd to sing louder and even beckoned us to “Harmonize with me!”. Listen and download a few free songs from Magic Giant

“Seamless Mix of Pop, Rock, and Folk Music”

The night only became more energized from that point on, with the four-piece band decked out in face paint, banjos, mandolins, fiddles, upright basses, acoustic guitars, lots of drums, and even a harmonica, rocking out to their seamless mix of pop, rock, and folk music.

The guys in Magic Giant were so infectiously enthusiastic about everything, thanking the crowd for being there and for singing along, even to songs we didn’t know, given that they’ve only released four of their songs via their Soundcloud. They also mentioned that their performance in the Constellation Room was the first show of their debut tour, which is amazing considering how well they engaged with the crowd. They had us all line dancing, while the members of the band, in particular  singer Austin and guitarist Brian Zaghi, romped happily around the stage.

After the show all four members of the band stuck around to meet anyone who wanted to talk to them, and many people did! It seemed that not only did Magic Giant have a lot of fans, but a lot of friends also came out to their show. Many people also supported the band by purchasing their merchandise, which was  all custom made, since the band re-purposes old clothing in order to make an environmental difference. I was lucky enough to meet, talk to, and joke around with all of the band, and was happy to tell them that theirs was one of the most engaging concerts I’ve been to!

Magic Giant goes to New York next on their tour, but will be local again on Valentine’s Day  with a show at the Troubadour in Los Angeles!
